Turkesterone vs Ecdysterone: Which Is Worth It? (US 2026)

Ecdysterone is the one with human evidence: a 10-week trial in 46 training men found larger gains in muscle mass and bench press. Turkesterone has no published training trial at all. But before you pick either in the US, know that when a lab bought eight turkesterone products and measured them, the best one held 0.1% of what its label claimed.

That last sentence decides more than the first two. This is a comparison where the compound you choose matters less than whether the capsule contains it — so here is what has actually been measured in humans for each, what the analytical chemists keep finding inside the bottles, and what we would tell you about our own Turkesterone Advanced Formula before you spend $75.00 on it.

Ecdysterone: one real trial, and a strange sequel

Ecdysterone — 20-hydroxyecdysone, or 20E — is a steroid made by plants and insects. It is not a hormone in the human sense: it does not bind the androgen receptor, and the working theory is that its effects run through estrogen receptor beta instead.

The study that made it famous is Isenmann and colleagues, published in Archives of Toxicology in 2019. Forty-six young men did ten weeks of strength training. Some received ecdysterone-containing supplements at different doses, some did not. The supplements were screened beforehand for anabolic steroid contamination, and the participants were screened for prohibited substances, so the effect measured was the compound's own.

The dosed participants gained significantly more muscle mass. They also added significantly more to their one-repetition bench press. Liver and kidney markers did not move. The same hypertrophic effect showed up in C2C12 muscle cells in the dish. The authors ended the paper by recommending that ecdysterone be added to the list of substances prohibited in sport — which tells you how seriously they took their own result.

Then came the sequel, and it is the reason this article exists.

THE SEQUEL NOBODY QUOTES

The 12-week trial that tested the product instead of the compound

In 2025, a team including several of the same researchers ran a 12-week randomised, double-blind trial in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. Twenty-eight resistance-trained young men were recruited and twenty-four finished. One group took a commercially available phytosteroid product — 20E plus diosgenin — three times a day exactly as its own label instructed. The other took placebo. Both trained with free weights three times a week.

Squat and bench one-rep max improved. Fat-free mass, muscle mass and muscle thickness improved. Every one of those was a time effect, present in both groups. There was no group effect anywhere. The training worked; the supplement added nothing measurable on top of it.

Then the researchers did the thing almost nobody does. They put the capsules through LC-MS/MS.

The product contained less than 1% of the 20-hydroxyecdysone its label claimed, and 10.4% of the diosgenin. When they tested the same product on muscle cells afterwards, it produced no biological activity and no hypertrophic effect at all. The trial had not tested ecdysterone. It had tested a capsule that was, for practical purposes, empty.

That is a null result you cannot use as evidence against the compound — and it is a devastating result about the category.

Turkesterone: the popular one, with an almost empty evidence file

Turkesterone is a different ecdysteroid, drawn mainly from Ajuga turkestanica. It is the one that went viral, and it is the one you will find on far more US shelves than ecdysterone.

We looked for a published randomised training trial of turkesterone in humans and could not find one.

What exists is a preliminary study published in Muscles in 2024. Eleven healthy men, average age 23, took acute doses of turkesterone with blood drawn before, three hours after and twenty-four hours after. The researchers looked for changes in serum IGF-1, resting metabolic rate, and lipid and carbohydrate metabolism.

They found no significant effects on any of them. IGF-1 did drift upward without reaching significance, and resting metabolic rate stayed above baseline across the three hours measured, which the authors offered as grounds for a longer study. They were straightforward about what the data did and did not support. The compound was well tolerated, with a favourable blood-pressure and digestive profile — that part held up.

So the honest scoreboard is: ecdysterone has one positive training trial in 46 men and one null trial whose product was empty. Turkesterone has one 11-man acute study that found nothing, and no training trial at all.

The lab test that should change how you shop

In July 2023, JAMA Network Open published an analysis by Pieter Cohen at Harvard Medical School and analytical chemists at the University of Mississippi. They bought 63 sports supplements online and analysed 57 of them by mass spectrometry, across five botanical ingredients. Eight of the 57 listed turkesterone.

Across all 57 products, 40% contained no detectable amount of the ingredient on the label. Measured quantities ran from 0.02% to 334% of what was claimed. Only 11% of products landed within 10% of their label figure. Eighty-nine percent of labels did not accurately declare what was in the bottle, and 12% of products contained ingredients the FDA prohibits.

The eight turkesterone products were the worst group in the study. Four contained none at all. The remaining ones measured between 0.01 mg and 0.1 mg per serving against label claims of 300 mg to 550 mg — between 0.02% and 0.1% of the stated amount. Not one of the eight delivered anything close to a usable dose.

One point of fairness: none of the eight contained an FDA-prohibited drug. The problem with turkesterone products in that sample was not contamination. It was absence.

A 2026 analysis in Molecules found the same pattern from the other direction. Thirteen commercial supplements were measured; several products standardised to 80–95% ecdysterone held substantially less than declared, ranging from below the detection limit to about 50 mg per capsule, while some non-standardised products reached about 105 mg. Turkesterone content varied widely among products sold as standardised extracts.

OUR VERDICT

On published human evidence, ecdysterone wins — but it is on the WADA Monitoring Program, so any drug-tested athlete should leave both alone. For everyone else the real decision is not which ecdysteroid to buy, it is whether the seller can show you a batch assay proving the compound is in there. Nobody in the 2023 JAMA sample could.

The anti-doping line that catches people out

Ecdysterone has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency's Monitoring Program since 2020. Monitoring is not the same as banned — it means WADA is collecting data on how often it turns up in athlete samples to decide whether to prohibit it. The 2019 trial authors argued openly that it should be prohibited.

If you compete in anything drug-tested, from collegiate sport to a tested powerlifting federation, that status is a reason to stay away from ecdysterone. Rules change, and the researchers who ran the strongest trial on it are the ones asking for the change.

Turkesterone is not on that list. Given how little of it appears to reach the inside of an actual capsule, that is less reassuring than it sounds.

What it costs in the US

What we would rather you heard from us about our own bottle

Our Turkesterone Advanced Formula lists 500 mg of turkesterone from Ajuga turkestanica per daily serving, alongside 300 mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha, 250 mg of Tongkat Ali, 250 mg of colostrum and 10 mg of BioPerine. Three things about that, said plainly.

First: 500 mg is the same figure the empty products claimed. The products the JAMA team tested listed 300 mg to 550 mg. A number on a label is a claim, not a measurement, and we are not going to ask you to trust ours more than theirs on the strength of the printing. If you want certainty about the turkesterone content of any bottle — ours included — the only thing that provides it is a batch certificate of analysis from an independent lab, and we are not publishing a turkesterone assay for the current batch. Treat the 500 mg the way this article has asked you to treat every other 500 mg on the market: as unverified.

Second: the ingredients in that bottle with the strongest human evidence are not the turkesterone. A 2026 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Pharmacology pooled 20 randomised trials and 1,249 participants on ashwagandha. It found a significant increase in serum testosterone and in muscle strength, and the strength effect was much larger in people who were already physically active than in untrained groups. It found no effect on body weight or body fat. Tongkat Ali has its own body of randomised work in men, though the clearest results come from men who start with low testosterone or sexual dysfunction rather than healthy trained lifters. If you buy this bottle, buy it for the 300 mg of KSM-66 and the 250 mg of Tongkat Ali. The turkesterone is the marketing.

Third: our product page oversells it. It says "Doctor-approved. Backed by 100,000+ studies." There is no set of 100,000 studies behind this formula, and that phrasing is not one we would defend in front of the evidence laid out above. It is on our list to rewrite. A safety note that belongs with an honest read: a 2026 systematic review in Pharmaceuticals looked at 23 trials and 2,317 participants taking standardised ashwagandha root extract at 125–600 mg a day for up to 180 days, and found liver, kidney, blood, hormone and cardiovascular markers staying inside normal clinical ranges. The same review pointed out that the liver case reports that raised concern mostly involved non-standardised or multi-ingredient products. Ours is a multi-ingredient product. Is turkesterone a steroid?

Is ecdysterone banned in sport?

You cannot tell from the label. In the 2023 JAMA Network Open analysis, eight of eight turkesterone products delivered 0.1% or less of their claimed amount, and four contained none. The only proof is a batch-specific certificate of analysis from an independent laboratory showing the measured content.

Can I get ecdysterone from food instead?

Not in useful amounts. Studies of quinoa and spinach — the two richest common sources — found that only about 1.4% to 2.6% of the ecdysterone consumed came back out in urine as parent compound plus metabolites. The researchers concluded that both are poor sources in bioavailability terms.

Are there side effects?

The 10-week ecdysterone trial found no rise in liver or kidney markers. The acute turkesterone study reported good tolerability with no adverse blood-pressure or digestive effects. Neither compound has long-term human safety data, so treat anything beyond a few months as untested. Do not use either if you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, or taking prescription medication without asking your doctor first.

How long before I would know if it worked?

The ecdysterone trial ran ten weeks and the phytosteroid follow-up ran twelve, with training three times a week in both. If you run the experiment, run it for at least ten weeks with a fixed training programme and a written log — otherwise you will be reading normal training progress as a supplement effect, which is exactly what the 12-week trial showed happens.
